It's nearly the same like Rigs but for BPs. Maybe the Calibration points should lower, while using molecular-based components. Or maybe it needs a rig-slot. Target here would be to have a standard-BP, which has automatically something like a rig but you don't have to produce and fit it in another production way.
You can use moon mining for gaining the resources of the components, research them and construct them. Or maybe using the materials allready on market.
Branding

I like this idea. The manufacturer, the researcher (idea above) and so on should be seen while buying the item. I personally don't want to buy a ship from someone called "As* Enterprises" or "Legolas123" 
Your idea gives me an idea . it may be nothing new doh, i was just browsing a little in this thread for the first time.
It's very simple. you can use rigs when building a ship (the already existing ones, ore maybe a new set of predefined bonuses). Because they're build-in instead of hacked in somehow later they have a smaller drawback or a better bonus. but they would eat up rig-slots and calibration.
Now you'd have cheap mass-production ships and specialisations, which, of course, would need some kind of branding .
The good thing about it is that it is very simple. It does use existing stuff and adds new functionality. Rigs are already in the game, and a lot of houres of tweaking has be invested in fitting them in savely.
I don't think ccp is ever going to let us tweak the attributes of ships and equipment ourselfes, because it would be much to complex. Not the functionality to do that, but the outcome of it. Its very likely within the millions of resulting settings some would be extreamly overpowerd. And a game with a bad balance will die (exept everyone enjoys to fly the same few nber-ships..).
In my head it works perfectly, so feel free to point out what i missed
